Thanksgiving

The most familiar story of the first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth Colony, (Massachusetts) in 1621. More than 200 years later, President Abraham Lincoln declared the final Thursday in November as a national day of thanksgiving. Congress finally made Thanksgiving Day an official national holiday in 1941.

THANKSGIVING FACTS
  • Americans feast on 535 million pounds of turkey on Thanksgiving

  • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be our national bird.

  • Only male (tom) turkeys gobble. Females make a clicking noise. The famous gobble is actually a seasonal mating call.

  • The Turkey Trot, a ballroom dance in the 1900s, was named for the short, jerky steps of the turkey. It became popular mainly because it was denounced by the Vatican as "suggestive."

  • Turkeys can drown if they look up when it's raining!

  • Pilgrims did not have big buckles on their clothing, shoes, or hats.

  • President Thomas Jefferson scoffed at the idea of establishing a national “Thanksgiving Day.”

  • The average person consumes 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day.

Her Miles Are Over

A few weeks back In a previous blog I talked about a 9 year old girl named Melana Matson. Miles for Melana was a fundraiser to help this young girl's family with the expensive medical bills they were aquiring. The fundraiser went well and it was a very big help to her family. The bad news is Melana passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. To read her full obituary click on the second link or for more information from the funeral home click on the frist link.
